ABSTRACT

Melissa officinalis, also known as lemon balm, consists of many active compounds, which are beneficial due to their medicinal activities. Traditionally, this herb has been used to improve memory, to treat depression, anxiety, and other heart injuries. The traditional uses of the Melissa officinalis suggest the therapeutic importance of this plant. Some of the bioactive compositions and their structures of M. officinalis listed in this chapter are flavonoids, terpenes, hesperidin, and essential oils. The plant extract of M. officinalis can help in curing cardiac injuries and can be used as neuroprotective agent. The essential oil of lemon balm can work as anti-infectious agent against bacteria and viruses, and have elicited promising high efficacy against resistant strains. Some other therapeutic activities of M. officinalis are also discussed in detail in this chapter.
