ABSTRACT

Callicarpa L. is a large genus of herbaceous plants in the Lamiaceae family that is widely distributed in the East and Southeast Asia, Australia, North America, and Central America. It contains about 160 species. Many species of this genus have been extensively used in various traditional medicines. Ethnomedical reports include the use of the Callicarpa genus for the treatment of inflammation, rheumatism, haematuria, hematemesis, fractures, women amenorrhea, gastrointestinal bleeding, scrofula, abdominal colic and for the treatment of stomach cancer and haemostatic agent. The Callicarpa species contain a variety of secondary metabolites such as terpenoids, flavonoids, phenylethanoids, and phenylpropanoids among which calliterpenone, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, quercetin, etc are common. Owing to this, many species of this genus have attracted the interest of many researchers and have been studied for their anticancer, anti-inflammatory, immunogenic and wound healing activity, antibacterial activity, antifungal activity, antidiabetic, antioxidant and antiparasitic activities.
