ABSTRACT

Perinatal asphyxia is caused by a lack of oxygen supply (hypoxia) to the end organs due to a hypoxemic or ischemic insult that occurs close to childbirth (peripartum) or childbirth (intrapartum). There are various factors that can affect the development of perinatal asphyxia, including disturbances in the position of the placenta, poor oxygen supply to the fetus by the placenta, various diseases of the mother, irregular positions of the fetus, and medications during pregnancy and childbirth. Common to all is the chronic or acute suffering of the fetus and the newborn over different periods of time with early and late sequelae.
