ABSTRACT

Synchronous Generators with Permanent Magnet rotor are extensively used in wind energy conversion systems as it offers high efficiency, allows full controllability over active and reactive power and also gearless operation is possible. This work is focused on providing the engineering and design configurations of a grid connected wind energy conversion system using synchronous generators with permanent magnet rotor. Control designs using diode based rectifier with a boost converter at the machine side and using end to end connected converters are discussed. A complete simulation and analysis of various control designs in terms of average power harnessed through WECS, quality of power, control of reactive power etc. is also presented. Optimal power tracking has been implemented to harness the maximum power available for a given wind velocity.
