ABSTRACT
A new born child brings happiness to the family. It is looked upon as one who will keep up the family line and an angel of prosperity. The evolution of treatment strategies towards persons with disabilities has passed through four main stages. The development of disabled persons is a social and psychological need as well as an economic necessity. The government has paid attention to the education, training, employment and rehabilitation of the disabled. The State provides grant-in-aid schemes but restricted only to education and vocational training and limited to the salary of the trainers and staff of organizations engaged in the field. Parivaar is the largest parents’-run association with 210 NGOs associated from all the 35 states and Union Territories. Creation of awareness within society to accept the intellectually disabled and those with other developmental disabilities as contributing members at par with others and to eventually enable their inclusion in every sphere of life.
