ABSTRACT

The closing two decades of the twentieth century witnessed significant development in the field of disability rehabilitation in general, with considerable focus on Information Communication Technology. The role of rehabilitation psychologists in this rehabilitation process lies in synchronizing the technology with available services delivery models for PWDs and their families. Families play a significant role in the rehabilitation process of PWDs. Disabilities pose challenges to families at every subsequent stage of the life-cycle of the differently-abled individual, right from detection, screening, diagnosis, to intervention and rehabilitation. Families that have been closely associated with persons with disabilities often undergo stress/psychic crisis and follow various models of adjustment to disability, ranging from shock, to denial, anger, disbelief, etc., prior to the adaptation process. Parents/families should thus be counseled at each phase, given emotional support and educated and updated about newly available rehabilitation services.
