ABSTRACT

Spectrum requirements for mobile telecom services increase with the change of generation. The radio frequency spectrum is a unique, non-depletable, but limited natural resource. The Radio Regulations, an international treaty for administrations to govern the use of radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits at the global level. As defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), these services include inter-alia Fixed mobile, broadcasting, aeronautical, navigation, satellite etc. As per the Radiocommunication Sector of the ITU, 41 different radio communication services require a spectrum. ITU works through its three sectors; the radiocommunication sector, the telecommunication standardization sector and the telecommunication development sector. The chapter provides insight into the spectrum allocation process for international mobile telecommunications (IMT) services starting from the beginning of mobile telecom services. Spectrum so far identified for IMT services was insufficient to meet the requirements due to the rapid growth of mobile data services and wireless internet access.
