ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates the advantages of the Terahertz (THz) band for the evolution of sixth generation (6G), applications and use cases, challenges and mitigation techniques. The opening up of new spectrum bands will require novel radio designs that can simultaneously sense and communicate over the entire Electro-Magnetic spectrum. The experience of telecom operators in deployment of mm waveband for fifth generation has not yielded the desired speed of 100 Gbps v/s attainment of 1 Gbps in practical. The four major emerging trends advancing towards 6G are - connected machines, the use of artificial intelligence, the openness of mobile communications and increased contribution to achieving social goals. 6G is in the inception stage, and several candidate technologies are being considered to realise 6G requirements. Free space path loss is proportional to the square of the signal frequency. The severe path-loss in the THz band can be overcome by utilizing massive antenna arrays at the base station, that is, ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output.
