ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the technology where the satellite to fifth generation (5G)/sixth generation (6G) users’ equipment access can be potentially exploited to address use cases for Internet of Things and human-centric devices for 5G and 6G networks at a massive scale. Building the radio access network in space powered by solar energy may sound quite logical to alleviate environmental and signal pollution. The device shall have a satellite modem with third generation partnership project (3GPP) and non-3GPP satellite access support, communicating directly with the satellite in full-duplex mode. The 5G core network can utilise this network element to enable the device to communicate with the core network using a non-3GPP satellite link. Depending on the frequency bands, 5G satellite UE may use the same frequency band for uplink communication as that being used by the cellular UE for the downlink communication.
