ABSTRACT

Conservation agriculture is one the effective Resource Conservation Technologies, which is based on three principles which are minimum soil disturbance, maintenance of permanent soil covers by the use of crop residues and cover crops and diverse plant associations which included crop rotations. Development of proper low-cost crop residue management strategies should be based on the crops taken along with enhancing factors that will accelerate their decomposition. Conservation Agriculture is a new paradigm by achieving sustained agricultural production and is a major step in the transition to sustainable agriculture. Conservation agriculture comprises of various conservational tillage methods like Zero Tillage involving nominal mechanical seedbed preparation and dependence on herbicides or cover crops or both to control weeds. With increased industrial demand for crop residues, conservation agriculture offers a good opportunity managing the residues in a productive and profitable manner. Utilization of crop residues can be through the brown route or the green route at the farm level.
