ABSTRACT

Organic farming is distinguished from conventional agriculture by exercising particular respect for human values, the environment, nature, and animal welfare, etc. This chapter discusses the role of organic/biodynamic agriculture in natural resource conservation. The explicit goal of organic/biodynamic agriculture is to contribute to sustainability enhancement. The modern agriculture depends on the use of external inputs which are energy intensive. Their continuous use leads to resource exploitation or unsustainable utilization resulting in environmental damage, loss of biodiversity, soil health issues, food contamination, human and animal health issues etc. In many developing countries, organic agriculture is adopted as a method to improve household food security or to achieve a reduction of input costs. Organic/biodynamic agriculture is a traditional method of conservation of natural resources. Thus, adopting organic farming ensures optimum use of natural resources that address many local as well as global issues.
