ABSTRACT

The inevitability of detrimental effects of climate change is looming large not only on the sustenance of agriculture, but also on the survival and progress of mankind. This chapter discusses some of the traits and looks for the approaches used for mining genetic resources for identification of such traits. Development of climate resilient (CR) variety with specific traits requires not only in-depth understanding of genetics and physiology of CR traits but also genetic resources harboring those traits. Breeding crops for achieving higher yield potential majorly targets maximization of canopy photosynthesis. Senescence or ageing is a developmental process in crop plants characterized by loss of chlorophyll, nutrient remobilization and decrease in photosynthetic rate. Grain yield and quality is determined by the filling rate and duration of grain filling.
