ABSTRACT

The need for communication between physical devices embedded with sensors sparked the need for a new field in information technology known as the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is simply a collective network of connected devices with the technology facilitating communication between devices and the cloud, as well as among the devices themselves. The need for IoT is accelerating and is one of the most promising technologies of the twenty-first century. The reason for the success of IoT is its low cost and low-power sensors, connectivity, cloud storage, machine learning and artificial intelligence. This is because, in IoT, the physical world meets the digital world. Advances in IoT are also helping machines gather health-related data using health monitoring sensors like smartwatches, sensors fitted in rooms, etc. This data in turn helps to analyze a person’s health issues. In this chapter, we will look at the journey of IoT and its advancement in terms of Industrial IoT and its applications and look at the possible prospects of IoT in the future.
