ABSTRACT

Coldwater aquaculture is a rapidly growing industry functioning worldwide. The challenges faced by this sector are sophisticated and multilateral. Among the constraints encountered, infectious diseases take a lion’s share, creating a huge loss annually. Bacterial diseases of salmonids are considered to be important in causing severe loss in the cold water fisheries. Therefore, preventive strategies based on scientifically recommended principles are advocated. These strategies should ideally focus on preventing the occurrence of the disease rather than treating the diseased ones. As a single approach is not always successful, a combination of different schedules is recommended. The current chapter highlights some of the important bacterial diseases of coldwater aquaculture and their preventive approaches.
