ABSTRACT

Hydrogen is emerging as a promising energy carrier in the quest to decarbonize a variety of industries, including those involved in the provision of heat and power. The unique and multifaceted applications of hydrogen are attracting significant attention from diverse sectors such as fuel cells, maritime, pharmaceutical, and aviation industries. The term “hydrogen economy” encapsulates the idea of utilizing hydrogen in a manner that is safe, cost-efficient, and sustainable across a wide range of settings. The shift toward a hydrogen economy symbolizes a fundamental transformation in the global energy scene, as countries worldwide endeavor to diminish their carbon emissions and tackle the pressing issue of climate change. This transformation represents a significant stride toward a sustainable future, harnessing the potential of hydrogen as a clean, renewable energy source. The current chapter aims to provide an extensive overview of the hydrogen economy, elucidating its critical role in achieving sustainable development goals. Furthermore, it seeks to highlight the interconnectedness between the hydrogen economy and sustainability objectives. It also aims to explore the current and futuristic roles that hydrogen can play as a significant catalyst, encouraging and facilitating the transition toward sustainable energy.
