ABSTRACT

The salinization of freshwater bodies due to the use of road deicing salts has become a growing concern in recent years. Road salts, such as sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride, are commonly used in many regions of the world to improve winter driving conditions. However, the salts are often washed off the roads during rainfall or snowmelt and end up in nearby freshwater systems. This can result in high concentrations of salts in rivers, lakes, and groundwater, which can have lasting ecological effects and can even contaminate drinking water supplies.
