ABSTRACT

In this paper, some basic concepts of Digital Twins and the benefits of their applications are presented. One of their applications was identified in the development of predictive maintenance systems. The case study presented included some of the authors' research and results in implementing a predictive maintenance system for a flexible manufacturing cell and its digital twin production correspondent. The presented results include IoT devices, signal processing algorithms based on Shepard local approximation operators defined over the Riesz MV-algebra of IoT devices, signals, and classification algorithms developed using Artificial Neural Networks, and the way they are used in the development and implementation of the digital twin production correspondent of the flexible manufacturing cell studied. The presented results and conclusions fully sustain the need to further research, develop, and apply digital twins in industrial processes and predictive maintenance.
