ABSTRACT

Internet of things (IoT) is a significant emerging topic of economic significance, social significance, and technical significance. Our daily products, like durable goods, consumer products, cars and trucks, industrial components, sensors, etc., are being paired with robust Internet connectivity capabilities of data analytics for a smooth operation that will transform our daily life, and the way we work, lead, and move. The concept of combining computers and networks for daily devices like monitors and mobile phones has existed for decades now. Not only modern technology and market trends, but also several other industries are adopting IoT in their daily work process for the more smooth progress of work, thus bringing the IoT more deeply to the real world. One such large industry is the construction industry. More than about 16% of the nation’s working population depends on its livelihood in the construction industry. Over 30 million people employ under the Indian construction industry, and it creates assets worth more than 300 billion. It almost contributes about 5% to the GDP of the country and 78% of gross capital creation. It is beginning to attract huge attention now a day in the construction industry. IoT devices, mobiles, and sensors are collecting job site data in a more efficient, affordable, and effective way than ever imaginable, with ease in 22work. In this recent concept, IoT is advancing the possibilities in various areas of application for smart construction. IT-based construction works are one of the prime and one of the most conservative industries in terms of adapting new methods or technologies. From a civil engineering point of view, we can assure that the use of IoT in the construction industry will simplify, to a considerable degree, the work. This chapter enlightens the knowledge of using digital technologies to transform construction work into a smart one. The fields where IoT can be applied for smooth as well as the rapid advancement of the construction procedure are discussed herein. There are actually huge challenges identified via some brief literature review, and the solution to them is delivered. In this era of digitalization, it’s high time we apply IoT in our construction industry. At the moment, emerging countries, such as India, need rapid infrastructure and building growth. The solution to it aims to employ IoT technologies to accelerate building. Not only that it will make the industry smooth, but it will also help in increasing employment, business, and enrollment, and as a whole, the economy of our country. We have also gone through the feasibility of IoT so that the construction industry remains the largest industry in this world.
