ABSTRACT

Extraction of bioactive compounds is widely studied due to the great variety of biological properties and potential industrial applications that involve this type of molecules. The need to improve the extraction processes by applying green technologies, such as maceration, ultrasound, microwaves, supercritical fluids, ohmic heating is a current topic of interest. In this matter, biotechnological approaches may help in the reduction of the environmental impact and operational costs generated in the conventional recovery of the bioactive compounds that resulting in the implementation of other effectives and unconventional friendly technique such as the fermentation in solid and liquid states. In this chapter, the economic impact involved in the recovery of bioactive compounds will be analyzed and documented, focusing on the biotechnological processes compared with the conventional process, from the obtaining of the raw materials, the development of the extraction technology processes of bioactive compounds, the continuous use of the equipment, and 170the waste generated. Also, some recommendations will be given considering a global process in the extraction of the bioactive compounds relating their efficacy and market cost for sustainable development. Finally, some advice to improve the process costs will be detailed and highlighted to have realizable alternatives in the present market of the bioactive compounds.
