ABSTRACT

Urbanisation is a global phenomenon which might act as both favourable and unpleasant for a region. It is undeniably necessary for planners to design a sustainably developed area to maintain balanced ecological surroundings. This chapter tries to shed light on the evolution of North Guwahati over the past decade. Satellite images were collected from various sources and analysed to obtain necessary information. An unsupervised classification technique was used to interpret the area’s land-use and land-cover patterns for three years. The findings show that the urban growth process in this satellite town has remained unbalanced and lacks a sustainable approach.
