ABSTRACT

In post-globalization periods as the population grows more and more, space is required to accommodate the growing population of any region, especially fertile and agriculturally sound areas. The area under study is a part of and gateway to the Sunderbans from Kolkata. Canning-I block occupies 17.02% of subdivision area and 1.89% of district (South 24 Parganas, West Bengal) area. Topo-sheets of the area under study were used in the preparation of land-use map of 1968, US Geological Survey Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper image of the study area for preparation of land-use map of 1993, and US Geological Survey Landsat 8 and Operational Land Imager images of the study area for preparation of land-use map of 2018. The major negative total volume of changes in land use/land cover is agricultural land which is −21.10%, and aquacultural land occupied 4.4% of the land of the total area under study. The total volume of changes in land per hundred population from 1968 to 2018 of Canning-I block was −67%, and the total volume of changes of literates per hundred population of Canning-I block is 186%. There were 122 pre-primary schools, 114 primary schools, 25 middle schools, 15 secondary schools, eight senior secondary schools, and one college.
