ABSTRACT

The chapter aims to explore the themes of gender roles, gender identities, and the various positions in the spectrum of the non-binary concept of gender and how they affect or have an influence on the rearing of a child. The orientations, ideologies, beliefs, and schemas held by a parent regarding his or her gender, or the idea of gender as a whole, become a part of his or her personality. As agents of personality development for a child, including his gender identity, these ideologies held by a parent, as well as that of the other members of the family, play an essential role, which will be discussed in detail.

The psychological viewpoints on the development of a person’s gender identity, and how behaviors are shaped by the gender gaps that are brought about or play an important role in child rearing, are some of the other subsequent themes that will be looked into in depth. Gender gaps can be exhibited primarily in two ways. Firstly, the gap between the parents (or immediate family members) in terms of their gender, and secondly, the gap is found due to the biological sex of the child and his or her subsequent gender identity.
