ABSTRACT

Malaria is a widely distributed disease which occurs generally in the tropics, estimated to be 3.3 billion cases per year. Plants are the most potent reservoir of many important natural active molecules with various health benefits and medicinal importance. Aspidosperma is one of the potent plant genera associated with various health benefits used in various countries. Aspidosperma genera associated plant species are the natural hotspot for several alkaloid group of compounds which shows antimalarial activities. Isolated pure compounds like elliptocine, olivacine, and aspidospermine are potent candidates in treating malaria. In recent times, different antimalarial drugs have been unable to control diseases, whereas active compounds isolated from Aspidosperma spp. are the new area of research in controlling malarial diseases. A basic knowledge about antimalarials and other traditional uses of Aspidosperma sp. will be helpful for young minds related to this study area. In this book chapter, we are presenting a fundamental understanding of the Aspidosperma spp. related to antimalarial and other ethnomedicinal activity.
