ABSTRACT

The advent of the Internet of Things (IOT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in industries makes the manufacturing processes more optimal. AI helps industrial engineers in the automation of distinct industrial processes such as designing, manufacturing, defect detection etc., so as to increase overall productivity. The production line is the main concern of industrial engineers to increase productivity. There exist several data-driven techniques to solve the problems concerned with production lines. The conceptual model of the production line in a manufacturing industry is briefly explained and distinct problems concerned with the production line are discussed in this chapter. The four major characteristics of a production line within a manufacturing unit to have maximum throughput are also explained in this chapter. The distinct models based on Machine Learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques that are employed in industrial engineering are included in this chapter. At the end of this chapter, the chapter outlines several challenges that industrial engineers must consider in future work regarding Industry 4.0.
