ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of artificial intelligence (AI) and highlights some important and up-to-date applications of AI in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Given the high prevalence of NAFLD in the general population, a simple, inexpensive and easily accessible screening tool that can be used by primary care providers is necessary for early diagnosis of NAFLD and prevention of its complications. Machine learning techniques including deep learning are emerging as highly promising tools for accurate and efficient interpretation of digitized liver biopsy images in patients with NAFLD. In addition to screening for NAFLD among the general population, it is also important to identify those with more advanced disease such as NASH and hepatic fibrosis who are at higher risk of liver-related complications. Patients with NAFLD generate an enormous volume of multimodal data from various sources, including clinical documents, laboratory tests, radiologic and histopathologic images and multiomics studies.
