ABSTRACT

This study thoroughly studied the heterogeneity of three-dimensional (3-D) structures utilizing the fractal geometry method. As a concrete sample of the 3-D aggregate-packing system, three types of asphalt mixtures (AC, SMA, and OGFC) and two specifications (Chinese and Super-pave) were utilized to prepare the specimens. Firstly, totally 128 specimens were selected from the digital mixture database and preliminary collated, which were then reconstructed and sieved based on the previously proposed methods. Subsequently, the multifractal approaches were applied to present the meso-structuralcharacterization of the aggregate-packing system. Overall, it is confirmed that the internal structures of the asphalt mixture are typically multifractal. Besides, the fractal and multifractal indicators enriched the options for microstructural evaluation, which will be conducive to figure out the cross-scale correlations of asphalt pavement.
