ABSTRACT

Vaccination programs can provide effective means of disease prevention and control in finfish aquaculture, yet vaccine developers face many challenges during the journey from identifying the need for a vaccine through to implementation and working with end users post-commercialization. These challenges can be grouped together broadly into those associated with the market, pathogen, host, formulation, assessing efficacy, and pre- and post-launch, and may be considered further as biological, technical, financial, and social in nature. The aim of this chapter is to describe the key challenges faced when developing a vaccine for a fish disease and to provide perspective on the ways forward to overcome these barriers, thereby helping to unlock the full potential of vaccines in finfish aquaculture.
