ABSTRACT

Surveillance is the secret observation of people, areas, and vehicles in order to reduce mishaps in a city. It not only prevents mishaps from occurring, but it also aids in determining the cause and intent of an incident. The surveillance system in smart cities is multi-layered, spanning from electronic monitoring through analytics and outcomes. It requires seamless interaction between these layers to ensure high usability, which is a challenging task. In this context, this chapter presents a framework for smart city surveillance systems. Following that, it addresses the importance of adopting green computing practices and reviews the security issues of surveillance systems for smart cities. Thereafter, it highlights the challenges associated with implementing various security mechanisms in this context. Lastly, the chapter provides recommendations for future research directions, aiming to fill the existing gaps and explore uncharted areas within the domain of green computing and security.
