ABSTRACT

In recent years, the development of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology has improved tremendously. WSN consists of a collection of sensor nodes that are used to monitor and record the different physical conditions such as sound, temperature, pollution levels, humidity and wind for transmitting the sensed information to a centralized station periodically. Typical applications of WSNs include tracking, healthcare monitoring, battlefield surveillance and many more. However, WSN is exposed to various attacks such as sinkhole attacks, wormhole attacks, blackhole attacks, etc. In this context, we mainly concentrate on sinkhole attack in which, the malicious nodes disseminate mendacious messages to the surrounding nodes. It may transmit false information to the sink node and avoids the node from obtaining the complete and correct sensing data. Hence, security is very important in WSNs. To overcome this security challenge, RIPEMD [RACE Integrity Primitives Evaluation Message Digest] algorithm is proposed to detect and neutralize sinkholes. The various parameters have been analysed for the performance evaluation of the proposed work.
