ABSTRACT

Essential oils, as natural products with complex compositions consisting of hundreds of components, have gained tremendous popularity, especially in the last decade. In addition to the important medicinal properties of essential oils, some toxic effects occur in some cases reported in the literature. While people use essential oils against various ailments with their significant biological effects, many use them to help with insomnia. Sleep disorders are a common problem among the general population. Insomnia, as one of the sleep disorders, can cause many psychological and physiological health problems in human life. For this purpose, besides standard drugs and psychological interventions, different complementary herbal treatments are also used. Essential oils also appear as natural complex mixtures from aromatic plants, frequently encountered in this treatment. This chapter explores the information available in the latest literature regarding essential oils in this field. All the available publications were compiled from electronic databases, mainly using Google Scholar, PubMed®, and Web of Science. In this chapter, one of the critical purposes is to raise awareness and interest in the potential usage of essential oils, which positively contribute to the human body, to eliminate insomnia.
