ABSTRACT

Food products are frequently used to prevent illness and treat it. The majority of pharmacological compounds currently employed in formulations were first utilised in their basic form thousands of years ago. The term “nutraceutics” was originally used in 1989 by Dr Stephen DeFelice to describe a field of medicine or healthcare that offers advantages in the treatment and prevention of illnesses. This chapter will give an overview of nutraceuticals and the role of nutraceuticals in prevention and treatment of diverse diseases along with their importance.
