ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter was to identify the benefits for sustainability from green pharmaceutical production activities. Green manufacturing to produce green products is now increasing in response to the national and international environmental laws and the pressure from local communities where the industry is located. Companies are now investing more money for the greening the production process to minimize the environmental pollution and improve the relationship with local communities and other stakeholders. The pharmaceutical companies are now responding to the green pharmaceutical production, and this contributes to sustainability. This chapter identifies the social, environmental, and economic sustainability benefits from green pharmaceutical production. The social benefits include improved relationship between companies and local communities, improved corporate image and reputation, improved trust between consumers and companies. The environmental benefits include improved environmental quality by the reduction of environmental pollution and improved quality of life of local community by reducing negative impact on health. The economic benefits include the avoidance of cost of conflict with local community, improved competitive advantage in the market due the achievement of corporate image, and reduced cost of operation and tax benefits. Also, recommendations were made to improve further green manufacturing and thereby create the sustainability benefits. These include the improvement of public awareness about green products, enforcement of environmental laws by the government, institutional arrangements, and adoption of modern technologies.
