ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a learner-centered approach to teaching that parallels the patient-centered clinical method. The four components of the learner-centered approach are described referencing how they relate to the literature on learning and teaching and showing how the relationship between learners and teachers and their roles differ from the conventional approach to medical education. Fundamental to this changed approach is a shift to a more balanced sharing of power between learner and teacher and the importance of recognizing how the demography of the medical school population has diversified. Several short case studies are included to bring to life how this approach is enacted in the clinical setting.
