ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by persistent hyperglycemia. DM is a major global health problem; 451 million people were projected to have diabetes in 2017, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects more than 90% of them. The basic pathophysiology behind DM is the destruction of beta cell, insulin resistance and glucose metabolism, there are several treatment and management therapy, but they have some disadvantages. DM is widely connected with other life-threatening diseases, and its a common co-morbid condition now a day. Functional food is food that may provide the nutritional effect to the body with minimum risk. Functional food in daily diet improve mental health and also for managing disease. We use functional food in DM to manage DM in different ways. Functional food has different activities which are necessary for the treatment 140of DM. In this chapter, we focus on the different types of DM and functional food and their role in DM.
