ABSTRACT

The Ro–Ro Ship facility is required to operate at Hazira located in the Gulf of Combay, India, where tidal variation is about 7m, significant wave height of 3.9 m and peak period of 10.2 sec. The Ro-Ro Ship facility consists of approach jetty, floating pontoon and gangway. The ramp from Ro-Ro Ship and gangway from the approach jetty are supported by floating pontoon. Based on the methodology followed in Ship Design practice, the main dimensions of the pontoon are obtained to meet the specific functional requirements. The floating pontoon is connected by four piles thereby allowing the pontoon to have only heave motion. The gangway is erected by means of jacks pushing from the approach jetty to the guide piles. The guide piles are used to support the gangway during construction. The hydraulic jacks, hanger arms, wire-rope slings, etc are used to lift the gangway and position it on the pontoon.
