ABSTRACT

A full-scale specimen was fabricated and tested to investigate the axial compressive behavior of concrete columns with multiple CFST cores. This test is the largest tonnage compressive test (100,000 kN) ever performed in civil engineering. The CFST cores were prefabricated with a pressure-forming process and enhanced by the fiber-reinforced polymer. Several preliminary experiments were conducted concerning the effects of the different prefabricated processes. The test results show that both the pressure-forming process and the utilization of the fiber-reinforced polymer can improve the axial compressive strength of CFSTs, and the axial compressive behavior of a concrete column with nine prefabricated CFST cores was significantly enhanced. This study verifies the excellent mechanical properties and good application prospects of prefabricated CFSTs.
