ABSTRACT

In Dentistry, alginate impression material used to obtain a negative mold of the oral tissues. Alginate material have properties that absorb water (imbibition) and shrinkage of the impression material. Alginate which has been printed in the oral cavity will cause cross-contamination of patient. Prevention of cross-contamination by using a povidone iodine solution can kill bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. Objective: This study aimed to observe the effect of submersion of alginate impression material in the povidone iodine solution towards the dimensional change of alginate in the different time. Methods: This research is an experimental laboratory with in-vitro research plan. Water and alginate stirred with alginator. Then, poured into molds and used the vibrator. After setting, alginate is realesed from the mold and measured with calipers. It takes one mold at room temperature and three molds submersed in a povidone iodine solution in a predetermined time. Measure the alginate molds after submerse in predetermined time. Result: The results showed that in length, width and height, there were significant differences in the dimensions of the casts on all sides at 1 minutes to 5 minutes, on casts 5 minutes to 10 minutes and on casts 1 minutes to 10 minutes but there is no significant difference on the long side from 5 minutes to 10 minutes and the high side from 1 minute to 5 minutes. Conclusion : Based on the results of the research above, there is a change in the dimensions of the alginate mold which is influenced by immersion in povidone iodine solution. At 1 minute, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes of immersion.
