ABSTRACT

The denture base is the part of the denture that is attached to the soft tissues of the mouth and receives support from the remaining alveolar bone tissue and is also a place for denture elements. The most commonly used denture base is acrylic resin with a heat-cured type. An alternative denture cleanser is needed to minimize the effects of chemicals. Herbal plant extracts have also been researched and tested as antibacterial and antimicrobial agents in dentistry, one of the natural ingredients used is basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum L). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effect of basil leaf extract (Ocimum basilicum L) as a denture cleaning agent on the roughness of heat-cured acrylic resin surface. METHODS: This research is an experimental laboratory with pre-test and post-test group design. Total of 32 rectangular samples were prepared from heat-cured acrylic resin and immersed in basil leaf extract (Ocimum basilicum L) with 100% concentration for 10 days. RESULT: The results showed a significant change in the surface roughness of heat-cured acrylic resin after being immersed with 100% concentration basil leaf extract (Ocimum basilicum L). CONCLUSION: The current research demonstrated that pure basil leaf extract caused an increase in the level of surface roughness.
