ABSTRACT

In order to update the 1999 classification, AAP and EFP convened a global workshop in 2017. As a result of this workshop, the 2017 classification of periodontal disease and peri-implant disease was published. The terms “chronic periodontitis” and “aggressive perio-dontitis” have been combined to form the term “periodontitis” in the 2017 categorization of periodontitis. By staging and grading, the revised 2017 periodontitis classification further categorizes periodontitis. To ascertain the benefits and drawbacks of implementing the new periodontitis categorization in 2017, this scoping review was conducted through a broad review, as a descriptive, observational research. Three internet databases—Google Scholar, PubMed, and Wiley Online Library—were searched using a Boolean search method for the research. Eleven journal articles covered the benefits and drawbacks of implementing the new periodontitis classification in 2017. Eight publications demonstrated the benefits of the staging and grading classification, while the remaining three journal articles emphasized the drawbacks of the new classification's adoption. The 2017 periodontitis categorization has a number of advantages that have been demonstrated, including its capacity to capture the complexity, development, and risk factors of periodontitis in addition to its severity. The revised 2017 periodontitis categorization offers a number of advantages, including an overview of a case's prognosis and potential dangers, which ultimately influence the choice of therapy. However, challenges that were directly tied to educational background were discovered after the revised periodontitis categorization was established in 2017, therefore not all dental professionals can obtain the same agreement and accuracy.
