ABSTRACT

Our survival is at stake and sustainable development is the need of the hour. Environmental protection is one such dimension warranted by the 2030 agenda for sustainable development that is targeted through 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This requires an enormous effort in the issues like climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, lack of waste management, and health and hygiene standards that have produced a gargantuan impact on the environment and health. Tackling these issues confronts industrialists, academicians, researchers, and medical practitioners with a mammoth challenge.

This chapter focuses on the various issues related to the environment and health and how the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and its techniques such as machine learning (ML), deep learning, robotics, computer vision, and pattern recognition can help in waste management. Other technologies, such as Digital Twin (DT), support vector machine (SVM), genetic algorithm (GA), artificial neural networks (ANN), etc., can also optimize global waste and water management. The AI algorithmic methods and ML techniques can help in marine research, including marine biodiversity surveillance and conservation; deep sea resource modeling, and predicting sea ice and climate despite some drawbacks. Furthermore, image recognition and various ML algorithms help in smart addressing, monitoring, and tackling issues, thereby targeting the achievement of the SDGs.
