ABSTRACT

The technology and materials for 3D printing have been advancing at an exponential rate in recent years, with new applications and capabilities being developed all the time. One area that has seen particularly exciting progress is the area of hybrid additive manufacturing of composites. In this chapter, hybrid additive manufacturing of polymers and some of the potential applications for this technology are explored. This chapter is focused on the theory and applications of laser beam-based deposition, electron beam-based deposition, metal arc-based deposition, and friction stir processing. It also deals with the challenges that need to be overcome before these techniques can be widely adopted.
