ABSTRACT

Modern society is reacting according to the decision of intelligence supports. Two such influencing technologies are IoT and AI. Most of the lives and the valuable times of humans are saved using the intelligent transportation systems (ITS). This chapter covers various functionalities of IoT-enabled transportation systems using smart devices like sensors and its usage in three verticals such as on road sensors to control the traffic and efficient parking, in vehicle sensors to prevent accidents and on body sensors to monitor the driver’s condition. And then it is broadened towards the AI functionalities in ITS where the IoT network is deployed. The focus on safety, traffic management, parking management, electronic toll collection, automatic fare collection, etc., are bringing up the cities and 34its transport facilities on the roadside in a better way. Speed alert system, emergency vehicle notification, driver drowsiness detection, etc., are the supportive systems to ensure public safety in all aspects. As an exemplar, a model is implemented and tested using a kind of on body sensor as eye blink sensor to detect driver’s drowsiness in a smart way. Further, with the output of the sensor an AI technique as CNN algorithm is used to classify and decide the feel of the driver accurately. This helps to take the further action to alert the driver by its decision. This implementation ensures safety for the passengers and prevents accidents.
