ABSTRACT

The Western Ghats (WG) is one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world known for its unique flora and fauna composition and their endemicity. In the Western Ghats, 253 species of amphibians are reported with 93.67% endemicity. These 253 species could be systematically arranged into 32 genera and 12 families. Among these 237 species, 17 genera, and four families are endemic to the escarpment. IUCN Red List conservation status suggests 24.4% as threatened species and for 66% of the species the data is either deficient or not assessed. The species accumulation curve for the escarpment shows the mixed trends since the inception of the studies, but the latest trends suggest the possibilities of many more new species descriptions in the near future.
