ABSTRACT

The history of the discovery and study of amphibians is presented. The main research started in the early 1990s and is still ongoing. Many new species have been discovered and made available to science. However, our knowledge of the biology and ecology of many species is still unknown. Many taxonomic findings can only be clarified with collaboration with Indian scientists, as many species of the drier areas of Sri Lanka are closely related or identical to species of India. Completely different are amphibian species distributed only in the humid zone of Sri Lanka. They are separated from India by the dry zone and have evolved separately from Indian influence. The endangerment of Sri Lankan amphibians is discussed.
