ABSTRACT

This paper investigates a hybrid tensioned string system fitted with an arbitrary finite number of tuned mass dampers. The equation of motion of the system is nondimensionalized and transformed into an ordinary differential equation by using the separation of variables method. The frequency equation of the system is derived and solved to get an approximate analytical solution for the complex frequency of the system. An approximate expression of the modal damping ratio is then obtained. The effect of several parameters, including damper mounting position, damper stiffness, and damper mass, on the modal damping ratio of the system, is studied for the case of a string with a single damper. The results show that the modal damping ratio expressions obtained in this paper are more consistent with reality than the previous results.
