ABSTRACT

As the traffic volume of trunk highways grows fast with the rapid development of China's economy, various distresses appear inevitably in the asphalt pavement, and upgradation and reconstruction become a necessity to the pavement with the increase in the service time of trunk highways. At present, it is unfounded and subjective to propose a detection scheme for old pavement in the upgrading and reconstructing of trunk highways. No specifications or guidelines especially designed for major maintenance or upgradation and reconstruction of trunk highways are available. By summarizing the previous experience of old road detection and in view of the features of trunk highway upgrading, the paper proposes formulating the detection scheme by determining typical road sections through investigation of typical distresses, performing general detection of the whole line and key detection of typical road sections and combining field detection and indoor material test. In addition, the paper provides a case study that shows the detection scheme of the old road, proposed based on features of upgradation and reconstruction of trunk highways, can be well applied to practical projects.
