ABSTRACT

The digitalization of education is a reality in the contemporary society. With the coming of COVID-19 as a global pandemic, along with its associated lockdowns and other public health measures in place, most educators across the world have been forced to move towards a partial or fully online and/or digital educational model. This has been actualized through the usage of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). While the necessary requirement to continue the process of education has been realized, this massive and sudden need to digitalize education has created certain problems – for students, teachers, and the educational institutes alike. The contemporary scenario surrounding the state of Cyber-education – a term that the current chapter uses to denote all forms of online, digital, and blended modes of education – has again proved that technological developments such as digitalization and their application are not simple processes but rather encompasses broader aspects such as social class, accessibility, and socioeconomic marginalization processes, among others. The chapter brings forward some of the issues faced by various stakeholders in this day and age of cyber-education and attempts to provide a holistic understanding of those issues. The chapter, at the same time, retains a continued emphasis on the broader social reality and the manner in which capitalism and neoliberalism, 226along with the ongoing global pandemic caused by COVID-19, influence these issues.
