ABSTRACT

Except for burnt clay bricks, processed rubble cannot be re-used as concrete aggregate according to German standards. In 1987 a pilot project was started in West Berlin in order to get a single permission for re-using about 5000 tons of processed rubble. Several aptitude tests had to be performed in order to find out whether the products of the recycling plants in West Berlin can be used for this purpose. The test results were compared with data from literature. The mechanical properties of concrete with recycled aggregate seem to be sufficient for many purposes. Problems may occur because of the reduced resistance against frost and carbonation.
