ABSTRACT

For the construction of part of the embankment walls of the “Berendrecht” lock, the demolition waste of the “Zandvliet” lock was used. In function of the properties of the produced rubble aggregates an ideal composition for the recycled concrete had to be determined. During the processing of the demolition waste due attention was paid to the grading, the filler content, the particle size index and the water absorption of the produced rubble aggregates. The mix proportions of the recycled concrete were determined on the basis of an extensive study. A concrete grade B35 was perfectly well attainable with the rubble aggregates. Further the shrinkage and workability of the recycled concrete was found to be nearly similar to this of the conventional concrete which was used at other locations of the site.
