ABSTRACT

It has been estimated that the amount of waste-cement concrete material generated yearly in Japan reaches more than 10 million tons, amounting to several percent if the quantity of concrete laid in one year, that is, one hundred and several tens of million m3. As the amount generated is enormous, disposal by abandoning and dumping at land reclamation sites is falling into such a state that it is not easy in regards to preserving the environment.

Under this background, Taiyu Kensetsu Co., Ltd. has made advances in the recycling of waste-cement concrete material for use as base course material and its practical use by installing a stationary plant in one of the suburbs of Nagoya City around 1976, which was the first one of its kind in Japan, and now, it has accumulated a great many achievements concerning production and construction. Therefore, the circumstances of the recycling of waste-concrete material as base course material in Japan and its features are described, and the process of its manufacture, kinds and quality characteristics of the recycled base course material and the results of the follow-up investigation after construction are reported based on the data of the achievements.
